Welcome to Exercise 7: The Bankruptcy Radar. This tool is heavily inspired by early-warning models like the famous Altman Z-Score. It integrates three critical vital signs in real-time: liquidity, profitability, and debt burden, providing an aggregated health score. Let’s walk through four structural scenarios together.

Scenario 1: On the Brink (Starting Point). Look at the default dashboard. Liquidity is at 2, Profitability at 3, and Debt is maxed out at 9. The needle is buried deep in the red Distress Zone, with a score of 1.6. This company exhibits extreme capital mismatch: it operates on a razor-thin cash cushion while massive debt obligations choke its cash flows. Without immediate restructuring, Chapter 11 bankruptcy is imminent.
Scenario 2: The Fire Sale Liquidity Injection. Let’s try to save the company using cash alone. Push the "Liquidity" slider to 6 (leaving Profitability at 3 and Debt at 9). The needle moves, but it stalls in the yellow Grey Zone. The takeaway? Liquidating assets to hoard cash buys you time, but it doesn't solve the underlying disease: a toxic capital structure.
Scenario 3: Shedding the Debt Burden. Reset Liquidity to 4. This time, as a turnaround specialist, you negotiate with creditors and slash the "Debt Burden" down to 3. Suddenly, despite having only average liquidity (4) and weak profitability (3), the radar swings into the green Safe Zone. This highlights a fundamental truth: companies rarely go bankrupt just because they lose money; they go bankrupt because they can't service their debt. Removing the debt anchor dramatically improves survival odds.
Scenario 4: Balanced Sustainable Growth. Now let’s build an optimal profile. Set Liquidity to 6, Profitability to 7, and Debt to 5. The needle stabilizes solidly in the green Safe Zone. This is the profile of a healthy, well-managed corporation. It maintains a safe cash buffer, generates strong operating profits (EBIT), and uses debt responsibly (not avoiding it entirely, which is inefficient, but keeping it strictly controlled).
Conclusion: The Bankruptcy Radar forcefully demonstrates that financial health is an interconnected ecosystem. Stellar profitability is useless if a crushing debt load destroys your liquidity. True fundamental analysis must always marry the income statement with the strength of the balance sheet.
