This introduction is about learning the financial language of business to develop the skill of reading between the lines. It emphasizes that a company's true economic condition is revealed not through marketing or CEO interviews, but through the hard numbers found in its annual reports. Furthermore, it outlines what these mandatory reports are and where to easily find them today—such as on investor relations websites, stock exchange portals like GPW or SEC EDGAR, and financial aggregators. Ultimately, it sets the stage for understanding whether a company is actually making money or merely burning through capital.
Uncovering the 'Why' Behind the Numbers
Welcome to the next level of economic analysis, where we move beyond simply asking what happened and start uncovering why it happened. This module introduces deterministic analysis, focusing on the chain substitution and logarithmic methods to precisely break down financial changes—like revenue growth or sudden cost spikes—into fundamental drivers such as volume, efficiency, and price. By mastering these analytical tools, you will learn how to separate market luck from actual performance and replace emotional business judgments with cold, hard facts.
Welcome to the field! Today, we leave the sterile environment of interactive sliders behind and dive into the raw, hard data of your assigned companies. Watch the introductory briefing below, then follow the instructions. Your printed Worksheet is your command center, while your smartphone will serve as your data-mining and reporting tool.
This module shifts our focus from the left side of the balance sheet to the right, exploring exactly how a corporation finances its operations. We analyze the critical balance between equity—the owners' capital and financial safety net—and liabilities, which represent external debt and financial leverage. By cross-referencing these funding sources with your asset data from Module 3, you will evaluate the company's financial independence, assess its risk appetite, and test its long-term stability using the Golden and Silver Rules of Financing.
This module focuses on corporate survival. We evaluate the company's ability to meet its immediate financial obligations by comparing short-term assets (what can be quickly monetized) against short-term liabilities (what must be paid soon). By calculating the Current, Quick, and Cash ratios, you will determine the quality of the company's liquidity cushion. Additionally, we will review long-term structural solvency to ensure the overall debt burden remains sustainable.
This module transitions from static balance sheet analysis to dynamic operational efficiency. By calculating the Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC), we measure the exact number of days a company's cash is tied up in its day-to-day operations. You will analyze how efficiently the company manages its inventory, how strictly it collects payments from customers, and how effectively it leverages its suppliers for free financing.
This module shifts our focus from relative liquidity ratios to absolute liquidity buffers. By calculating the Net Working Capital, we measure the exact monetary cushion the company has to operate day-to-day. You will analyze whether the management team prefers a safe, conservative approach, or a high-risk, aggressive strategy that maximizes returns at the edge of liquidity.
This module shifts our focus from basic survival (liquidity) to wealth creation. By calculating profitability ratios, we measure how efficiently a company translates its sales, assets, and equity into profit. You will analyze profit margins to understand expense management, and rates of return to evaluate if the company is creating true value for its shareholders.
This module brings together your knowledge of the balance sheet and the income statement to evaluate the company's debt sustainability. We are moving beyond simple debt ratios to analyze whether the cash generated by operations is sufficient to service the ongoing cost of borrowing. You will evaluate the company's Interest Coverage Ratio and determine its true financial risk.
This is your final analytical challenge. You will synthesize all the financial data gathered throughout the semester, perform a DuPont Analysis, benchmark your company against a key competitor, and issue a final, professional investment recommendation.
