Welcome to the Cash Runway simulator. This exercise illustrates the most critical survival metric for any early-stage startup: the Cash Runway. This metric tells you exactly how many months your company has left before it runs completely out of money, based on your current monthly Burn Rate. Let's analyze four crucial startup scenarios.

Scenario 1: The Warning Zone (Starting Point). Look at the default settings. You have 600 thousand in total cash and a monthly burn rate of 80 thousand. The tank turns a warning orange, showing a runway of just 7.5 months. In the Venture Capital world, this is a major red flag. Raising a new round of funding typically takes 6 to 9 months. This company must start fundraising today, or it will literally run out of time.
Scenario 2: The Hyper-Growth Trap. Imagine the founders decide to aggressively buy market share by massively increasing marketing and hiring. Move the "Burn Rate" slider to 150 thousand, leaving cash at 600 thousand. The tank immediately turns critical red. The runway plummets to just 4 months. This is a "do or die" strategy. If the market doesn't respond with immediate revenue, the company will be bankrupt before the end of the next quarter.
Scenario 3: Bootstrapping and Survival Mode. Let’s flip the script. Funding is tight, so you only have 500 thousand in the bank. However, a disciplined management team cuts all non-essential expenses, lowering the burn rate to 40 thousand. Set these values on the sliders. Despite having less cash, the tank turns a healthy green. Your runway extends to 12.5 months. This is survival mode, buying the product team the exact amount of time they need to find product-market fit.
Scenario 4: The Strategic Buffer. Now, set the cash to the maximum of 1000, and keep the burn rate at a moderate 60 thousand. The tank is nearly full. You have a massive runway of over 16 months. In this scenario, the company has complete operational comfort. Management doesn't have to panic or accept toxic term sheets from investors because their liquidity is securely locked in for well over a year.
Conclusion: Running a startup is a race against the clock. It doesn't matter how revolutionary your technology is; the physics of cash flow are absolute. Maintaining a cash runway of at least 12 to 18 months is the ultimate fiduciary duty of any founding team.
