THE STORY BEHIND THE NUMBERS: US GAAP Traps & The Textbook 50/50 Capital Split (Page 50 of PDF / Page 39 of 10-K)
In Module 3, Team 4 discovered that Amazon's US GAAP Balance Sheet on Page 50 of the 2025 Form 10-K PDF (Page 39 of the report) is flipped upside down, financing $818,042 million in assets led by AWS AI data centers and fulfillment robotics. Now, look at the bottom half of Page 50 (LIABILITIES AND STOCKHOLDERS' EQUITY) to see how Amazon finances this massive tech empire!
1. Three US GAAP Layout Traps on the Right Side of the Balance Sheet:
When European analysts look at a U.S. Form 10-K Balance Sheet, they immediately hit three structural traps:
- Trap #1 (Liabilities Come FIRST, Equity Comes LAST): In European IFRS (CD PROJEKT, ORLEN, Jeronimo Martins, Puig), Equity is printed at the top or middle and Current Liabilities at the bottom. Under US GAAP, Current liabilities come first ($218,005 million), followed by long-term liabilities, and Stockholders' equity ($411,065 million) sits at the very bottom!
- Trap #2 (No "Total Non-Current Liabilities" Subtotal): Amazon does not print a subtotal for Non-current liabilities! You must add the three lines below Total current liabilities yourself: Long-term lease liabilities ($87,339M) + Long-term debt ($65,648M) + Other long-term liabilities ($35,985M) = $188,972 million!
- Trap #3 (No "Total Liabilities" Subtotal): Amazon also omits the Total liabilities line! You must either add Current liabilities ($218,005M) + Non-current liabilities ($188,972M) OR subtract Total stockholders' equity ($411,065M) from Total liabilities and stockholders' equity ($818,042M) = $406,977 million!
2. The Textbook 50/50 Capital Split & Crossing the 1:1 Golden Rule Threshold in 2025 (101%):
Once you calculate those missing subtotals, look at Amazon's remarkable transformation between 2024 and 2025:
- Driven by soaring net profits, Stockholders' Equity (KW) surged by +43.7% (+44% YoY) from $285,970M in 2024 to $411,065M in 2025 (led by $250,536M in Retained earnings and $140,024M in Additional paid-in capital).
- This lifted Amazon's Equity Share from 45.8% (46%) in 2024 to a textbook 50.2% (50%) in 2025 (vs. 49.8% / 50% Total Debt), while Permanent Capital (KS = KW + ZD) reached $600,037 million (73.3% -> 73% of the Balance Sheet!).
- Even better: in 2024, Amazon's Equity-to-Debt ratio (KW / KO) was 84% (failing the 1:1 Golden Rule, passing only the 1:2 Silver Rule >= 50%). In 2025, dividing Equity ($411,065M) by Total Debt ($406,977M) gives 101.0% (101%) -- meaning Amazon officially crossed the 100% Golden Rule threshold!
📋 WORKFLOW FOR TEAMS 1–5: Paper First, Screen Second!
Use your printed paper worksheet as a scratchpad to extract the Y2024 figures from the PDF report and calculate your ratios. Once you have written down and rounded your answers on paper (whole numbers only, no decimals!), transfer them into the interactive online form below and click Check until every box turns 100% Green! Keep your paper worksheet ready for our live classroom comparison!
Goal: Navigate the right-hand side of Amazon's US GAAP Balance Sheet (Liabilities & Stockholders' Equity), check its massive YoY equity surge, and see how Amazon moved from passing only the Silver Rule in 2024 (84%) to passing the 1:1 Golden Rule of Financing in 2025 (101%)!
Worked Example: Step-by-Step for 2024 (Page 50 of the PDF / Page 39 of Form 10-K)
STEP 0: OBTAIN THE ANNUAL REPORT HERE
STEP 1: Find 4 numbers on the Liabilities & Equity side in 2024 (in USD million, 2024 column on Page 50):
[A] TOTAL LIABILITIES AND STOCKHOLDERS' EQUITY (Page 50, bottom row): 624,894
[B] TOTAL STOCKHOLDERS' EQUITY - KW (Page 50, near bottom): 285,970
[C] TOTAL LIABILITIES / DEBT - KO (Page 50: [A] 624,894 minus [B] 285,970): 338,924
[D] NON-CURRENT LIABILITIES - ZD (Page 50, sum of 3 lines below Current liabilities: 78,277 + 52,623 + 28,593): 159,493
STEP 2: How the 4 Key Capital Ratios are calculated (2024 Example):
1. Equity Growth YoY (%): Base Year (In 2025, you will compare 2025 Equity against 285,970).
2. Equity Share in Balance Sheet (%): ([B] / [A]) * 100% = (285,970 / 624,894) * 100% = 45.8% -> 46% (Debt Share = 54%).
3. Permanent Capital Share - KS (%): (([B] + [D]) / [A]) * 100% = ((285,970 + 159,493) / 624,894) * 100% = 71.3% -> 71%.
4. Golden (>=100%) & Silver (>=50%) Rule of Financing (KW / KO): ([B] / [C]) * 100% = (285,970 / 338,924) * 100% = 84.4% -> 84% -> FAILS Golden Rule (<100%), PASSES Silver Rule (>=50%)!
Your Turn: Task for Team 4 (Calculate 2025!)
Look at the 2025 column on Page 50 of the PDF and complete the exact same steps for 2025 (round percentages to whole numbers, no decimals):
STEP 1: Find the 4 numbers for 2025 (in USD million):
[A] TOTAL LIABILITIES AND STOCKHOLDERS' EQUITY (Page 50, bottom row) = ....................
[B] TOTAL STOCKHOLDERS' EQUITY - KW (Page 50, near bottom) = ....................
[C] TOTAL LIABILITIES / DEBT - KO ([A] 818,042 minus [B] 411,065) = ....................
[D] NON-CURRENT LIABILITIES - ZD (Add 3 lines: 87,339 + 65,648 + 35,985) = ....................
STEP 2: Calculate the 4 Key Ratios for 2025 (whole %, no decimals):
1. Equity Growth YoY (%) = (([B]_2025 - 285,970) / 285,970) * 100% = .......... %
2. Equity Share in Balance Sheet (%) = ([B]_2025 / [A]_2025) * 100% = .......... %
3. Permanent Capital Share - KS (%) = (([B]_2025 + [D]_2025) / [A]_2025) * 100% = .......... %
4. Equity-to-Debt Ratio (KW / KO %) = ([B]_2025 / [C]_2025) * 100% = .......... % (Passes Golden >=100% & Silver >=50%?)
