This module shifts our focus from relative liquidity ratios to absolute liquidity buffers. By calculating the Net Working Capital, we measure the exact monetary cushion the company has to operate day-to-day. You will analyze whether the management team prefers a safe, conservative approach, or a high-risk, aggressive strategy that maximizes returns at the edge of liquidity.
Open your company's Consolidated Annual Report on your smartphone. We are returning to the core of financial analysis: the Balance Sheet.
Navigate to the "Statement of Financial Position" (Balance Sheet). You will need data from both the Assets side and the Equity & Liabilities side.
Locate the necessary aggregates and transcribe them into SECTION A of your printed Worksheet.
Current Assets: Resources like cash, inventory, and receivables (the positive side of the cushion).
Current Liabilities: Short-term debts, supplier invoices, and obligations (the negative pull on the cushion).
Total Assets: The entire size of the company, which we will use to scale the NWC.
Complete SECTIONS B and C on your printed Worksheet. First, calculate the absolute value of the Net Working Capital. Is it a positive cushion, or a negative deficit? Next, divide this result by Total Assets to see how much of the company's total balance sheet is dedicated to this safety buffer.
Review your calculations. Have you identified the company's working capital strategy? Submit your team's findings to the Crisis Center using the form below.
